Dinner at Royal Eatery!

Since being here we kept hearing about how amazing ostrich meat was and that we had to try an ostrich burger. Ostrich is a red meat but healthier and leaner. We were finally ready about two weeks ago and decided to go to Royal Eatery, a place we heard had great food in addition to their ostrich burger. Royal Eatery is on Long Street which is a very fun area. There are various bars, lounges, restaurants and shops on Long Street. About 12 of us went but we had two separate tables. Our table ordered one burger we would all split in addition to other food... probably too much food. Did I mention I have been eating very good since I have been here?!? Enjoy the pics below of food, fellowship and fun! btw, the ostrich was great! Not my first choice over beef but I would get again. I also tried spring bok, antelope, another day while we were out. A friend got it and I had a piece. It was served with warm pear (the fruit not avocado for my West Indians) and it was also good.

Cape Point Peninsula Tour Day!

Two weeks ago we went on a day tour to Hout Bay Harbor, Table Mountain National Park where we climbed up Cape Point Peninsula and also visited a penguin farm.  When we arrived at Hout Bay we took a small boat over to seal island. Unfortunately, I got a little sea sick on the boat so I did not get many good pictures of the seals. I stepped outside for 30 seconds before running back in.

Our next stop was to Cape Point Peninsula. On our way over we saw ostriches and baboons while on the bus. When we got to Cape Point they told us that baboons were attracted to food so we had to leave all food on the bus. One of my classmates forgot he had a bag of potato chips in his pocket and he pulled them out. Immediately a baboon approached him. He quickly threw the chips at the baboon and ran away. It was scary and funny at the same time. I didn't get any pictures of it though.

Cape Point Peninsula was beautiful! It is the area where the Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean meet. There was a small trail to climb up to a lighthouse where you have a beautiful view. It only took about 30 mins to walk up. Once we got to the top there was a big rock in which visitors wrote their name and could you believe there was a "Makeda Spencer".  No one in my group had a marker so I had to write my name in pen. It is not very big but there nonetheless!

In the picture below one side is the Atlantic Ocean and the other is the Indian Ocean!

Our next stop after climbing Cape Point Peninsula was over to Boulder's Penguin Farm! This was one of my favorites! I thought penguins could only live on ice and cold weather but I was mistaken. There are 4 different types of penguins at this farm. Enjoy the pics below!

There was a small beach there that led into the Indian Ocean and even though it was freezing, I could not pass up the chance to dip my feet in!!

It was a long but amazing day!!

Braai at Mzoli's Place!

So if you know me you know how much I love food! I am happy to share that the food here in Cape Town has been amazing! From the restaurants to the produce and meat sold in supermarkets, everything is fresher than the states and less expensive. One of our favorite past times has been going to a braai at Mzoli's Place. Braai is Afrikaans for "barbeque" or "grill". Mzoli's Place is located in Gugulethu and on Sundays it is one big party! You go in to pick out which meats you would like grilled (lamb, chicken wings, steak, sausage, etc.), take it to the back and the grill it for you! It is also very inexpensive. There are not any sides for order so we brig our own and we also bring alcohol. We have been twice so far and each time we had a ball! There are a couple pics below from each visit including one of Mr. Mzoli himself!!

Welcome to Cape Town!!

So I started this blog to keep my friends and family updated with my study abroad program in Cape Town  , South Africa! I have been here for two weeks already and have seen and done so much! I will try to backtrack and update the blog as frequently as I can. Hope you enjoy!

Below are the views from my suite. We are staying at the Peninsula All Suites Hotel in the Sea Point section of Cape Town. The hotel is beautiful! We are right across from the ocean, however it is too chilly right now to go in the ocean. The hotel is amazing and they are very accommodating to our group.
